Don't be turned off by granny's 50 year old carpeting.  More likely it has a gem hidden underneath. Hardwood flooring that is just waiting to be discovered.

In some cases all this flooring needs is a sanding and refinishing which can be a fraction of the cost of new hardwood. If your handy, you can refinish the floors yourself. Many home improvement stores will rent the floor sander for as little as $250 per week!  The same sander will also work on your deck if the wood outside needs a touch up too. The stains start under $10 per Quart and glazes start at under $25 Quart.

The hardest part may be patching or figuring out how to use all the equipment. Lucking, youtube.com and lots of other online resources are there to help you.

If you're looking at a house and see the old carpeting, don't see it as dollar signs, see it as an opportunity to gain some quick and inexpensive sweat equity that is sure to pay off.
