North Jersey offers many ways to commemorate 9/11 on Wednesday’s 18th anniversary of the September 11 terror attack:

North Jersey commemorates 9/11


CHATHAM BOROUGH/TOWNSHIP

Thirteen Chatham borough and township residents died in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.  This year's 9/11 remembrance ceremony will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at the 9/11 Memorial located at Memorial Park on North Passaic Avenue. Organizers noted that there will not be any seating provided so those attending are asked to bring your own. This ceremony will take place rain or shine. BUTLER/BLOOMINGDALE

The Boroughs of Butler and Bloomingdale will host a Candlelight Walk in observance of the attack on America, starting at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 11. Guests are invited to gather at Sloan Park on Hamburg Turnpike in Bloomingdale at 7 p.m. for a brief ceremony before proceeding down Hamburg Tpke. to Main St. in Butler and continuing to Butler Park for a Memorial Service. HACKETTSTOWN

As part of the National Day of Service to remember the fallen, Centenary University, at 400 Jefferson St., will hold a series of events throughout the day Wednesday, September 11. Public parking for these events will be available in the visitors' section of the university's parking lot at 715 Grand Ave.

The start time of the events, 8:46 a.m., is symbolic, as it was when the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, struck the World Trade Center's North Tower on that fateful day in 2001. Hackettstown American Legion Post 164 will start the day with a remembrance ceremony and presentation of the colors on Centenary University's front lawn. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the quad on the Centenary University campus, members of the public are invited to view the "One Day Memorial" created by Centenary students, faculty and staff, with memorial signs and flags or cards created for Hackettstown's first responders. In case of rain, the One Day Memorial will be held in Alumni Alley, located in the Lackland Center. The events for the day will wind down at 3 p.m. with a candlelight vigil conducted by the university's chaplain, Tim Nicinski, in the Seay Building on campus.

HOPATCONG

Hopatcong's annual September 11 remembrance ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 11, at Borough Hall, 111 River Styx Road. Borough Councilman Bradley Hoferkamp, a retired FBI agent who was on his way to work in lower Manhattan the day of the attacks, will be one of the keynote speakers. Patriotic music including the National Anthem and "God Bless America" will be part of the musical program, in addition to spiritual songs "Amazing Grace" and "Praise Him in the Storm." A poetry reading, time of prayer, wreath-placing ceremony and bell-ringing ceremony will round out the program. NEWTON

A 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, at Sussex County Community College in front of the 9/11 Memorial on the Connor Green. The annual event is organized by the college and Sussex County PBA Local 138. During the ceremony, the New Jersey Army National Guard Aviation Unit will conduct a flyover; the unit's helicopter will be on display after the ceremony. Keynote speaker for the event will be John Fila of Engine Co. 54 FDNY. SSG. Cynthia Bengel and SFC. Fernando Cova-Gomez of the local New Jersey Army National Guard Recruiting Unit will present, honor and retire the colors. The Sussex County Sheriff's Office Bureau of Law Enforcement Honor Guard will be part of leading the ceremony. Local vocalists, Police Pipes and Drums of Morris County and Bugles Across America will participate in the musical portion of the program. The Boy Scouts will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Newton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5360 will conduct a gun salute in memory of those lost in the attacks. Local first responders from law enforcement, fire and EMS organizations will participate in the laying of the wreaths and will place a wreath from their organization in front of their respective agency at the memorial. PARSIPPANY

Join the township 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 11, outside the steps of Town Hall located at 1001 Parsippany Blvd, Parsippany, for a September 11 memorial service, rain or shine.  For more info, call 973-263-4350 or go to parsippany.net.

SPARTA

Sparta Elks Lodge 2356 will host and perform its September 11 ceremony at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Sparta Town Hall, 65 Main St. The Elks' ceremony is planned to include representatives from the Sparta police and fire departments, according to Lodge 2356 Exalted Ruler Jennifer Appaluccio. All local organizations are also welcome to attend.

WANTAGE

Holy Spirit Orthodox Church, 102 Route 284, Wantage, will hold a 9/11 memorial prayer service at 7 p.m., Wednesday, September 11.  There will also be a blessing of the Unionville N.Y. Sussex Elks Lodge 2288 will host a Sept. 11 and POW/MIA remembrance ceremony and dinner event 6-8 p.m. Friday, September 13, at the Elks Lodge, 152 County Route 565, Wantage.
