5 Ways To Commute To New York City From New Jersey
Follow the PATH
Fast and cheap, the PATH Subway connects Newark, Hoboken and Jersey City to Manhattan Midtown and the World Trade Center. With stops at 9th, 14th, 23rd and 33rd St, it’s super convenient to hop off and amble to your office, or jump on the subway. It runs 24/7, making those late nights at the office a little easier. All rides are $2.75 each way and the train takes no more than 25 minutes from the furthest stations and as little as 12 minutes if you are traveling from Hoboken to Midtown. Many New Jersey stops offer parking garages nearby, but beware these spots go fast and it’s best practice to book parking ahead of time to guarantee your spot.
Take the A Train
Or, actually, the The New Jersey Transit train. If you find a New Jersey home in the suburbs, this commuter option offers your best bet. These trains make quite a few more stops than the PATH and they tend to run less frequently. The cost per ticket depends on what stop you’re getting on/off at, but typically this option costs 3-5 times the cost of the PATH.
The NY Waterway Ferry offers boat rides from Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, and other parts of New Jersey to the financial district, Brooklyn, Queens, and midtown Manhattan. Generally less crowded than the train and subway, the Ferry also offers beautiful views. Ferries typically run about every 20 minutes and cost $9. each way for adults. Most people drive to, and park in the garage at, the Port Imperial/Weehawken landing, and take the Ferry to Pier 79 at West 39th St. At only about 8 minutes of travel time, the Ferry beats typical car and bus commute averages hands down! Once across the Hudson, the NY Waterway offers a free bus service. Some of their most popular routes include 57th Street, 49th Street, 42nd Street, 34th Street and a special Downtown loop.
Bus-t A Move
Want to be dropped off right in the center of NYC at Port Authority? Try the New Jersey Transit Bus System. Taking the bus gives you flexibility and space that the train oftentimes doesn’t, and you’ll be able to work or enjoy time reading while you wait for your stop.
Hit the Road, Jack
Driving to NYC offers the flexibility of operating on your own schedule without the downsides of public transportation. Before you opt to drive, factor in the cost of NYC parking, and check out online parking garage deals on sites like Groupon.
