Have a blast hittin’ the books and more at Sussex County’s library branches this summer with events for every age! With locations in Newton,Vernon, Stanhope, Franklin and Wantage, there's plenty around to do (and read!)

These Sussex County Library events go beyond the book!

Read & Play

Start ‘em young! Kids six months through 4 years old are entertained with stories, songs, activities and free play.

  • All branches, recurring dates, various times--check the Sussex County Library event calendar. Registration required.

Lunch Bunch

Kids listen while they lunch! From 12:30pm-1:30pm, children entering grades 1-3 bring their peanut-free lunch to the library to eat and play games and activities together in a casual afternoon class.

  • All branches, recurring dates. Registration required.

Shake Out Your Sillies!

Sing, dance and shake out your sillies with Kurt Gallagher. Kurt’s songs and stories, accompanied by guitar, ukulele, jaw harp, slide whistle, and lumberjack puppets (!) guarantee kids’ll be clapping, stomping, spinning and grinning. Registration required.

  • Main Library, Newton: July 21, 2:30pm-3:30pm

Screen Time

Come to the library for family movie screenings!

  • Main Library, Newton: July 14, SING!, 1pm and July 28, The LEGO Batman Movie, 1pm

Magic, Science, and Reptiles, Oh My!

Sciencetellers, Rizzo’s Reptiles and magicians Great Scott and Steve Woyce visit all of the branches over the course of the summer.  Check the Sussex County Library event calendar for updates.

  • Dates, locations and times TBD.

Code Mode

Kids entering 7th and 8th grades who have a strong interest in computers and learning to program sharpen their skills and find out what they can really do with a computer during this free, month-long program. (No experience necessary.) By the end of the last meeting you’ll know the basics of coding, the fundamentals of Java programming, and improve your problem-solving skills. Coding Club is being run by an 11th grade AP Computer Science student with two years of Java education.

  • Main Library, Newton:  Every Monday and Wednesday, July 10-August 2, 1pm-2:30pm

Make Mine Mediterranean

Love Spanish olives, real Feta cheese, and Italian wine? You’re well on the way to adopting the Mediterranean diet! Eating Mediterranean is a life choice to incorporate lots of fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, healthy grains and fish into your everyday eating. It’s olive oil versus butter and spice versus salt. And it’s delicious! ShopRite Dietitians Tara Gerke and Catherine Sebastian prepare a Mediterranean-style dish for everyone to taste as you learn more about incorporating these healthy life choices in the Discover and Taste the Mediterranean Diet event. Registration required.

  • Main Library, Newton: June 29, 2pm-3pm

For the Birds

Beginner and experienced adult crafters join Beverly to paint and decorate a birdhouse. Houses and paints supplied, but feel free to bring your own decorative elements as well (e.g. seashells, buttons, rhinestones, etc.). Registration required.

  • Main Library, Newton: July 7, 2pm-4pm
