Keeping cool in the hot summer months can be tough when the air conditioner is having a hard time keeping up with the heat wave. Maintaining your unit can keep you cool and save you money in the long and short run.

Inspect your AC unit on a regular basis, pay special attention to the condensation hose to make sure water is draining freely from the line. Create a drainage path if you see any standing water by the drainage line. Use a garden trowel, line the path with pebbles or QP to keep algae from forming. The screen around your air conditioner should be kept clear of debris to ensure ease of air flow. This will help your unit work more efficiently, and may even save you money!

Air filters need to be changed once per month and as often as every 2 week during peak season. With the heat weave in full swing, a stop at an air conditioned hardware store might feel good. Which filter is right for your family is up to you, but keep in mind that the fiberglass cost effective filters allow more air to pass though, reducing the amount of energy it takes to cool or heat your home.
