Winter Is Coming
Is your house ready?
Here are some tips to help get your biggest investment winter ready. There have been a few nights in Sussex County with frost warning already, don't get caught in the cold.
Trim Branches - that are hanging over the home and driveway. The heavy snow and ice can snap tree limbs and cause them to snap. While you are looking at the trees, check them to make sure they are healthy and will not fall on or near the home. Trim or remove all that trees and limbs that could fall and cause damage.
Clean Your Gutters - Its a job no one likes to do, but it pays when the fall and winter storms come. Clean gutters won't clog and cause large icicles and Ice dams. An ice dam is an ice build-up on roofs of buildings which may cause water damage to the building and contents if the water leaks through the roof. You can also purchase a heat cable to prevent ice dams for a few hundred for an average size home.
Freeze Proof Spigot - Put away your hoses and install freeze proof spigots if you have not already. A standard hose faucet freezes because the supply pipe connect to the faucet outside the heated house. This exposes the water to freezing temperatures. A freeze proof faucet, ranging from 4 to 24 inches in length, extends back into the house, and its valve seat—where the water stops when the faucet is off—is all the way inside. So once the handle is turned off outside, the water never makes it farther than the warm side of the wall; any water trapped in between just drains out the faucet.
